Places to Stay in Boothbay Harbor: By Trip, Neighborhood and Season

The peninsula is bigger than it looks on the map. Where you sleep decides whether your days start on foot or in the car.

Start with the trip, not the listing

Most places to stay in Boothbay Harbor look alike in photographs: water, boats, a porch. What separates them is where they sit on the peninsula and what kind of trip they suit. A couple who want to walk to dinner and a family who want a quiet cove and a dock need different addresses, even if both pictures show the same harbor.

So we sort it two ways. First by the kind of trip you are taking, then by the part of the peninsula. The season and the booking window come last, because they change everything else.

By trip type

A couple on a long weekend usually wants to walk. Dinner, a drink, the footbridge after dark, coffee in the morning without moving the car. That points to downtown or just above it.

A family with young children often does better with space and a little quiet: a rental cottage in East Boothbay or on Southport, a yard, a beach a short drive away. The trade-off is that every outing starts with buckling car seats.

Boaters and sailors want to be near the marinas and the town docks. Downtown and East Boothbay, where the boatyards are, both work.

A road trip with one night here wants easy parking and an early start. Anywhere on Route 27 into town will do, and a motel is a fair choice.

A small group or a family reunion is the one case where a whole house, or a block of rooms in one inn, beats scattering across town.

Downtown and Commercial Street

Downtown is the working harbor and the town center at once. The wharves, the boat tours, the footbridge, the shops and most of the restaurants are within a few minutes on foot. If this is your first visit, stay here.

Commercial Street runs along the west side of the harbor and climbs a little as it goes. Our two inns, Greenleaf Inn at 65 and Admiral's Quarters Inn at 71, sit on that rise above the water, which is where the harbor views come from. Parking is free at both, one space per room, and you will rarely need to move the car.

The cost of downtown is summer noise and summer traffic. On a July evening the street is busy. Most guests consider that part of the point.

East Boothbay

East Boothbay is across the harbor on the Damariscotta River side, a village with boatyards, a general store and a slower pace. It suits people who want water and quiet more than restaurants and shops. You will drive into town for dinner, about ten minutes, and you will want to plan around parking downtown in summer.

Southport

Southport is the island to the southwest, reached over a swing bridge. It is residential, wooded and very quiet, with cottages, a few inns and views of the outer islands and lighthouses. It is a good choice for a week with a car and a book. It is not the choice if you want to walk anywhere after dark.

Ocean Point

Ocean Point is the tip of the Linekin Neck in East Boothbay, where the harbor gives way to the open Atlantic. The shore road out there is one of the best drives on the peninsula, and the rocks face Ram Island Light and the outer islands. Lodging is mostly summer cottages and rentals. It is the farthest from town, roughly a twenty-minute drive, and the most dramatic place to wake up.

How the seasons change the answer

July and August are full everywhere. Book early, expect minimum stays on weekends, and accept that the best rooms go first.

June and September are the months our regulars choose. The boats and restaurants are running, the evenings are cool, and you can get a table without a wait. Late June also brings Windjammer Days, which fills downtown for the week.

May and October are shoulder months. Some seasonal businesses open late or close early, so a downtown base helps, because what is open is usually within walking distance.

November and December belong to Gardens Aglow and the town lights. In deep winter many seasonal places close, so ask any property, including ours, about winter dates before you plan.

Booking windows that work

For a summer weekend, book months ahead rather than weeks. For Windjammer Days, the Fourth of July and the Gardens Aglow weekends around Thanksgiving, earlier still. For June and September midweek, a few weeks out is often enough, and it is the best value of the year in our view.

When you book an inn, ask which room faces the harbor and which floor it is on. In historic buildings, rooms are not interchangeable, and the innkeeper will know which one matches the trip you described.

Questions we get asked

What is the best part of Boothbay Harbor to stay in?

Downtown and Commercial Street for a first visit, because the wharves, boat tours and restaurants are a walk away. East Boothbay, Southport and Ocean Point suit guests who want quiet and plan to drive.

Do I need a car if I stay downtown?

Not for the town itself. You will want one for the botanical gardens, Ocean Point, the land trust trails and Pemaquid Point.

When should I book a place to stay in Boothbay Harbor?

Months ahead for July, August and Windjammer Days. June and September are easier, and those are the months our regulars choose.

Is Ocean Point a good place to stay?

For views of the open ocean and a quiet week, yes. It is about twenty minutes from downtown, so plan on driving in for dinner.

Where do Greenleaf Inns sit in town?

On Commercial Street, on the ridge above the harbor: Greenleaf Inn at 65 and Admiral's Quarters Inn at 71. Both have free parking and are a short walk to the wharves.

Are places to stay in Boothbay Harbor open in winter?

Some are, many are not. Ask each property about winter dates directly, including us, before you plan a trip between January and March.
